Especially worth writing about
- A number that looks wrong. Tell me your ZIP code and what you expected. Incentive rules and net metering change often and I would rather hear about an error than keep publishing it.
- Price data for your state. The installed price band is the weakest input on the site. Real quotes with a price per watt help me improve it - and no, I do not want your contact details with it.
- A question about the workings. If the methodology page does not answer it, the page needs improving and I want to know.
What I cannot help with
- Recommending an installer. I have no relationships with installers and take no commission, which is the point.
- Reviewing your specific contract, or advising on your tax position. I am not a licensed adviser - see the disclaimer.
- Link exchanges, guest posts and paid placements. The answer is no.
Response time
This is not a staffed support desk. I usually reply within a few days. Reports of an incorrect number get looked at first, because a wrong figure on a page about a five-figure purchase is the only kind of problem here that can actually cost somebody money.
What happens to your email
It arrives in an ordinary mailbox and stays there. It is not added to a list, not used to send you anything you did not ask for, and not passed to an installer or anybody else. There is no newsletter to accidentally subscribe to. If you would like the correspondence deleted, say so and it will be.
This matters more than it might sound. The reason most solar estimate sites want your email is that the estimate is not the product - you are. Your details get sold to installers, sometimes several at once, and the calls follow. Writing to me here does not put you in that pipeline, because the pipeline does not exist.
If you have found a mistake
The most useful report includes the ZIP code you entered, the monthly bill, and what the page told you. That is enough to reproduce almost anything. If you think an assumption is wrong rather than a calculation - the rate at which electricity prices rise, say, or the cost of keeping a system running - a link to a source beats an argument, and I will change the model rather than defend it.
Corrections made this way are recorded on the methodology page, with the date they were checked, so you can see what changed and when.
